What is NGL?
NGL is a fresh take on anonymity. Users post an “NGL link” on their social media, and their followers can send anonymous messages to their NGL inbox in the app. We believe anonymity should provide a fun yet safe place to express your feelings and opinions without shame or judgement. In the current realm of social media, young people don’t have a space to share their feelings without judgement from friends or societal pressures. NGL provides this safe space for teens.
Why are my students using NGL?
Social media has become dangerously inauthentic. Though the medium began as a way to allow people to publicly share their thoughts, feelings, and lives, it has recently become a contest of who can make their life seem the most perfect. NGL aims to strip away this veneer of inauthenticity and replace it with the freedom of anonymity, allowing our users to express themselves freely and truthfully without fear of judgement. If your students are using NGL, we promise that it’s not just another social media app cluttering up their phone; it’s a new means of expression for their thoughts and feelings.
Is it safe?
The safety of the NGL community is of utmost importance to Team NGL. In fact, we have a whole page dedicated to helping you stay safe and sound while using NGL! As a result of our caution, we take various measures to keep our users safe, such as:
1. We use world class AI content moderation that utilizes deep learning and rule-based character pattern-matching algorithms to filter out harmful language and bullying. Our algorithm can also detect the semantic meaning of emojis and our web scraper pulls specific examples of contextual emoji use. This means we stay on trend, we understand lingo, and we know how to filter out harmful messages.
How can I protect my students who use NGL??
The safety of your students is just as important to us as it is to you. That’s why we have various measures that you can take with your students to ensure their security, such as:
1. In-app reporting and blocking. In the NGL app, we have a Report function for each message received so that you and your students can bring harmful messages to NGL’s attention. Additionally, you can block users on NGL by reporting a message for “Bullying or harassment”, and then clicking “Block.”
2. Contacting NGL. Team NGL takes safety issues very seriously, which is why we monitor reports and messages from our users daily. You can reach us at [email protected] with concerns about the safety or wellbeing of your students.
I’m concerned about my students’ use of NGL; what can I do?
We at NGL completely understand that the world of technology can be a learning curve, and learning about the new nuances and trends of social media is hard to keep up with! If you need help to learn more about NGL, we recommend speaking to your students directly; often, they can provide you with exactly the answer you’re looking for! If you still have questions that require clarification, feel free to reach out to our team at [email protected] and we would be happy to assist you.
